St. Petersburg, Russia
Kidsave has joined orphans with temporary host families in St.
Petersburg since 2003. In 2005, Kidsave and MAMA (an organization
for young mothers) opened the 59° 57' Internet Café,
where 24 computers are available to the public, at the rate of
50 rubles (about $1.78) per hour. The café works
with Kidsave’s local Secure
Futures Center to provide support, vocational skills
and internships to participating children.
Smolensk Russia
Since its inception in 2001, over 600 children have participated
in Kidsave’s Smolensk program. About 25% of these
kids have permanent mentors with whom they spend weekends and
holidays. The program includes an internet café providing
support and training for local participants.
Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia
Kidsave receives funding from the U.S. Agency for International
Development, through IREX, and from Sakhalin Energy via Star Stroi.
The objective is to enable orphans to spend vacations living with
local families, or the families of their orphanage caregivers.
Moscow, Russia
In 2004, the Moscow Department of Education asked Kidsave to
train local social workers on the Family
Visit Model at 10 sites in the city. This program is
funded with grants from generous supporters such as the Boeing
Company and The United Way of Moscow. Kidsave has also developed
the “School of Life” project in Moscow to provide
support, internships and life and vocational skills for participating
children. The “School of Life” is supported
by Dresdner, Kleinwort Wasserstein, Coca Cola, Deloitte and Touche,
AIG and other generous Moscow organizations.
Almaty, Kazakhstan
The Almaty, Kazakhstan, program launched in 2003 and has since
expanded to five new regions. An in-country NGO, AMANAT,
uses Kidsave’s approach to train other local NGOs. Kidsave
remains a consultant. To date, more than 100 children from
four institutions have participated.
