In Latin America, many children are the victims of war and neglect.  In Colombia alone, approximately 73,000 children live in institutions and an additional 30,000 live on the streets.  Poverty, forced displacement from internal conflicts and family violence are the main causes for child abuse and abandonment.  Since 2003, Kidsave has worked in the region to address these problems.

Colombia

Kidsave works in partnership with the Instituto Colombiano Bienestar Familiar (ICBF), the Colombian government agency responsible for child and family welfare.

In 2005, Kidsave opened an office in Bogota with the goal of establishing a Colombian family visit program based on Kidsave’s unique Family Visit Model, which has proved successful in Eastern Europe and the U.S.  “Encuentros Milagrosos” launched in 2006 as a pilot project in conjunction with the ICBF program "Familias Amigas."  Kidsave Colombia is also working with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to provide family-based alternatives over a two-year period to 80 kids in the country.

Peru

We are developing an in-country program in Peru, and hope to launch it by 2008.

96 kids have found homes through the U.S. Summer Miracles program

Between 2003 and 2006, 98 kids from Colombia traveled to the U.S. through Kidsave’s Summer Miracles program.  Of those, 87 found a family (together with nine of their siblings).  In  2006, Peruvian children also began participating in the U.S. Summer Miracles program.
