Success Stories | Egan's adoption

Success StoriesWhen I was young, I thought I would have one or two biological children and adopt one or two. Well, here we are all grown up and we do not have any biological children of our own. But we do have a darling ten-year old adopted daughter who has been with us now for 1 ½ years.

My husband and I met a little later in life and spent a few years settling in and enjoying our time together. I got pregnant and lost the baby and that stimulated action. Nothing was happening with invitro fertilization. So we set out to adopt. We focused on babies because we feared the unknown with older children. Although we had some opportunities, it just didn’t work out. Honestly, I don’t think the two of us really wanted a wee one at our age.

One evening, I noticed an ad on cable TV for Kidsave. I called to find out about the Summer Miracles® program. We eventually decided that we could afford to take six weeks out of our perfect little lives to show a child a good time for the summer.

The first little girl just didn’t work out. After three weeks, Kidsave explained that not everyone was suited for each other. They had another young girl in the L.A. area who still needed a committed family, so we brought Alana to our home. Within two days we made a commitment to her. We adopted Alana, and she arrived here just before her ninth birthday. She has such a beautiful spirit; she will say to me, “Isn’t it a beautiful day Mom?” One of her favorite things is baby dolls, and live babies. Eeks! All the young children follow her like she’s the mama duck. We already have parents lining her up for future babysitting jobs.

Since she has been with us she has earned her blue belt in Tae Kwon Do, she speaks English beautifully, has joined the Glee club, and is doing fine in school, but excelling in math. The other day she saw a picture of my father when he was a young man. She asked if that was my dad and I said yes. Then she said your dad was cute, but my dad is cuter! Oh how life has changed for the three of us.
