In the summer of 2009 a variety of adoption and child welfare
advocates expressed concern to Warner Bros. that its horror movie
“Orphan” may impede recruitment efforts for adoptive families for
older children by feeding into potential fears that older orphans
are like the fictional child in the movie – which is not at all
the case.
In response to concerns, Warner Bros. immediately revised a line
in the trailer for the movie that was considered insensitive and
provided an opportunity for a PSA to be included with the worldwide
DVD release. Kidsave worked with other leaders in the child welfare
community and produced a PSA that reminded viewers that the movie
Orphan is based on fictional characters and that there are millions
of real children waiting to be adopted. The PSA precedes the Warner
Bros. movie on the DVD, which was released in late October, 2009.
