Meet the DC Kids Needing Families

If you are interested in learning more about any of the children needing families, please contact Susan Punnett at susan@dcfyi.org.

Cierra

DC Weekend Miracles This delightful twelve year old will keep you on your toes. Cierra can more than hold up her end of a conversation and she has lots of funny stories to tell. At 13, she already knows that she wants to be a lawyer and thinks that she will be a good advocate for her clients. Cierra loves to keep busy. She likes being with her friends and maybe going to the mall. She is very intelligent and loves to read. She also enjoys singing and dancing. Cierra also has a good sense of humor and can make you laugh. It is important to her that she be able maintain contact with her siblings after she is adopted.

Devonte

DC Weekend MiraclesEighteen year old Devonte is both focused on his future and fun to be with. He says he can be funny, even goofy at times, but what’s most noticeable about Devonte is how dedicated he is to his studies and his future. He’s currently doubling up on classes to stay on track to graduate high school in June 2011. And then? “I plan to go to college and double major in business and either biology or forensic science. Business because I think it will look good on my resume and I’ve always thought about having my own company. Biology or forensic science because I like how people study crime scenes. It’s hard but I like that because it’s challenging.” That’s why Devonte likes math and science – because he likes to be challenged.

Devonte is quiet but not shy. He likes to draw, play basketball, go to the park, and play video games. His musical tastes run to R&B and Hip Hop. His faith is important to Devonte; he’d like to share church with his adoptive family but he’ll go whether or not they do. He’d also like to travel and experience new places.

What does Devonte want people to know abut him? “That I’m a good person. I’m a people person - easy to get along with and I show people respect. I like fairness. I care about my family and take my education very seriously.” Devonte also has a passion for social justice.

What does he want right now? A permanent family. He needs parents who will help him explore his college options, cheer him on at his high school graduation and support him as he takes the next big step and starts college.

Devonte wants African American parents who are calm and have a good sense of humor. He would prefer a mom and dad but would take either. The ideal family will live close enough to a metro line that he can easily complete his senior year at Maya Angelou Public Charter School.

Jamaal

DC Weekend MiraclesJamaal is bright, 13 year old who is eager to learn and has a thirst for knowledge. He loves staying active – whether playing football, biking, skate boarding or riding the rides in the amusement parks. Jamaal also has a passion for music and loves to sing. Jamaal is a young man with a lot of hope and aspirations. Although he has experienced some disappointment in his life, he has a heart filled with hope. Family is extremely important to Jamaal. He looks forward to being part of a loving, forever family of his own.

Troy

DC Weekend MiraclesIt’s very likely that you’ll have something in common with 17 year old Troy. He enjoys swimming, amusement parks, and board games. He loves art and music and has enjoyed being part of a choir. Troy enjoys different types of music and will listen or sing along to everything from classical music to Earth, Wind, and Fire to Etta James to Beyoncé. His recognition of songs and artists is amazing. While he sometimes likes to just hang out, Troy really enjoys being active. He’s an open and honest young man who enjoys feeling responsible and earning peoples’ trust. One thing he’d like people to know about him is that he really wants a family. That family can be one or two parents and have other children; he’s very open to anyone who will love him. Troy is very open to parents of different races.

Michelle, Nicole and Tommie

Nicole, Tommie, and Michelle are three siblings who are very close to one another.

DC Weekend Miracles Spending time with Nicole will transport you back to the days of your youth! At 17, she enjoys the things most teenagers do-shopping, talking on the phone, and going to the movies. Her athletic ability shined recently when she hit a bulls-eye on the archery course. The saying "still waters run deep" applies to Nicole. She doesn't always have something to say, but that doesn't mean she isn't listening! When she speaks one truly listens. Her brilliant smile is worth the coaxing it sometimes takes and it will make your heart warm when you see it.

DC Weekend MiraclesAt 16, Tommie (with an “ie” not a y!) is all boy. Displaying a natural affinity for sports, he is particularly fond of basketball and is easy to bond with over a game of one-on-one. If he cannot go outside don’t worry that he will be bored, Tommie is also an avid video game player. Tommie is not boisterous as some boys his age but he’ll earn your attention by his calm manner and his accomplishments in school.

DC Weekend MiraclesLast but most definitely not least is 11 year old Michelle, an outgoing girl who loves scary movies, Hip Hop, and talking…about almost anything! Michelle dreams of having a bedroom with pink curtains-one that she can share with lots of dolls! She has expressed a love of animals and would enjoy having pets-especially a poodle or a brown and white cat. Michelle is very mature for her age. She is also very attached to her siblings and likes to emulate her sister, whom she looks up to.

Nicole, Tommie and Michelle need to find a family who is interested in adopting them together.

He needs a strong, supportive and nurturing family who will allow him to stay connected with his siblings.

Danetta

DC Weekend MiraclesDanetta is an outgoing, talkative fourteen year old who isn’t afraid to speak her mind. She likes cheerleading, basketball, and track and field. Danetta says that she is shy but that you can’t tell when you meet her. She is generally happy. Dwayne is a good student with the ability to go far with his education. He is insightful and very articulate (with a very impressive vocabulary).
