Warsaw, Poland – March, 2024

Kidsave’s Pathway to Success program in Ukraine recently connected its youth with two Polish mentors, Joanna Iwanowska-Nielsen and Marta Zawadzka, both women with strong business backgrounds in international real estate, project management, and team leadership. In their role as mentors, they are certified and accredited by renowned organizations such as the European Mentoring and Coaching Council (EMCC).

As the war continues in Ukraine, it is challenging for young people—especially orphans and children without families—to feel hopeful a sense of purpose. That’s why initiatives like the Corporate Mentoring program, Pathway to Success, are so important because they recognize the critical role positive adult guidance plays in shaping the futures of displaced and vulnerable young people.

Nata Kravchuk, Head of Kidsave Ukraine, said, “Mentoring is an effective tool that helps vulnerable youth change their perspective, gain knowledge, and find their pathway to success with the support from experienced mentors.”

The Pathway to Success program matches young adult Ukrainians, ages 18-22, with established professionals from various fields who provide invaluable support and share their knowledge, experience, and wisdom to help the young adults navigate their personal and professional journeys.

When asked about the importance of this work, Polish mentor Marta Zawadzka said, “I strongly believe in the transformative power of guidance and support. Together we are building a future where every young person has the opportunity to grow, succeed, and make a positive impact in their world.”

Establishing a pilot program with mentors in Poland, directly across the western Ukrainian border, comes from a strong belief in:

  • Cultural Understanding:Polish mentors are familiar with the recent history and ongoing struggles of Ukraine and can offer culturally sensitive support and understanding.
  • Professional Networks:Polish mentors can leverage their networks to connect their mentees with educational and career opportunities in Poland.
  • Building Bridges:This program fosters positive cross-cultural exchange, strengthening the bond between Polish and Ukrainian communities.
  • Benchmark: The Polish economy is a natural choice for Ukrainian youth to be exploring in terms of education, personal development, and employment opportunities.

Mentor Joanna Iwanowska-Nielsen said, “It takes a village to raise a child; the more inclusive, international, and cross-cultural that village can be, the better. This benefits both the development of the very individuals as well as creating inclusive societies. Personally, I feel enriched and honoured to be a part of Kidsave’s mission of making a difference in the life of someone on the beginning of their developmental path.”

Pathways to Success has continued to grow over the years, despite the ongoing conflict with Russia. Since the program began in 2018, over 1,000 youth have been served, with 202 teens participating in 2023. Kidsave believes the program will only continue to grow from here.

Tatiana Stafford, Director of Kidsave Eastern Europe, said, “Together, through the dedication of Polish mentors and the support of our Kidsave community, we can continue to empower young Ukrainian orphans to build brighter futures, filled with hope and opportunity.
