About the event:

Every month, Kidsave Weekend Miracles hosts a Meet the Kids event. In September 2022, we hosted the foster children, host families, and prospective adoptive parents looking to engage with the Kidsave children at Kicker-Marillo Park in Houston, Texas. Nestled on the outskirts of Houston, this expansive park offers family-friendly walking trails, a winding river, and more. This warm Houston day was the perfect time for the kids to cast their lines into the open water to see what happened.

With the largest turnout of all previous Kidsave Weekend Miracles Houston events, we had 31 kids RSVP to attend! Welcoming the attendees were a group of Kidsave team members and a variety of host families and foster parents. Throughout the event, we watched as kids interacted with one another through friendly greetings, played games, and met the excitedly waiting families.

Kidsave Meet the Kids events allow families to experience each child’s true personality in an active setting. Fishing in September was the perfect experience to wrap up the summer excitement as we welcomed the changing seasons. Foster care kids are never promised a smooth transition in their seasons of change, which is why we work so hard to ensure they enjoy the monthly activities together.

After being led to the docks to pick up a few poles and cast lines into the river, the anticipation continued to see which lines would get a bite. Meanwhile, the fishing trip was perfect as a meet and greet experience since there were so many chances for families to kids to learn more about the host families. Building a genuine connection with fishing was an unforgettable experience with so many amazing kids surrounding you at once. Their smiles and laughter filled the park as they fished with each other, whether they had only learned about it a few minutes before or had attended the event as experienced professionals. The day was even more eventful as we saw quite a few kids catch some of the fish before returning them to the water.

After an extended period of fishing and chatting on the docks, everyone was more than ready to return to hanging out in a relaxed setting outside in the park. What was already a great turnout became better when we were able to deliver Whataburger, a Texas classic, to all of the kids and families for lunch! It was a hit as everyone sat down to laugh about their experiences, from first-time fishers to experienced pros. Smiles were beaming leading up to the big group photo before we celebrated the September birthdays.
